Southwest of downtown Las Cruces is Mesilla, a village founded in 1848 by Mexican settlers just as the U.S. took over New Mexico. The old buildings which surround a plaza have been restored and now houses galleries, boutiques and restaurants. The village is especially beautiful at Christmas.
Another historic site is Fort Selden State Monument, 15 miles north of Las Cruces. The old military post is now a museum and is open year-round. In the spring they host a Frontiers Days Celebaration which is fun for the whole family. In October Las Cruces hosts the world famous Whole Enchilada Fiesta, and in November you'll enjoy the sounds of the International Mariachi Conference.
The ruins of cliff dwellings inhabited by the Mimbres people can be seen at Gila Clif Dwellings National Monument about 150 miles away. A little closer to Las Cruces is the old west town of Silver City, the boyhood home of Billy the Kid.
